THE QUICK ANSWER
What to settle first.
A sewage cleanup proposal should explain more than the affected square footage. Crosswalk each work area against its containment boundary, people and equipment path, material disposition, contents custody, cleaning evidence and drying handoff. Keep drain or plumbing repair outside the cleanup finding unless the responsible trade documents it. This structure helps reveal an unassigned hallway, storage location or repair transition before work begins.
AT A GLANCE
Three points to clarify.
Boundary
Name the affected area, clean edge and movement path before work starts.
Custody
Record removal, retention, storage, transfer and authorization by item or material.
Handoff
Document the cleanup milestone that permits the planned drying work.
01 / WORK THROUGH THE DECISION
Draw the clean boundary and movement path first
Name the affected room, doorways, adjacent clean areas and the route used to carry equipment or removed material. Ask how the provider will prevent foot traffic, tools or airflow from widening the affected boundary. Do not enter or handle sewage-affected materials when the conditions require professional containment.
If an apartment, shared hallway or occupied room affects access, record the person who controls each space and the visit window. Access logistics do not change the material condition, but they can change how the cleanup sequence is performed.
02 / WORK THROUGH THE DECISION
Track every material and item by custody status
Use separate statuses for removed and discarded material, retained building material, contents moved within the property and contents transferred elsewhere. Record who authorized the action and where retained items will be stored or returned.
EPA guidance distinguishes materials that can be cleaned and dried from materials that cannot. The property-level decision still needs the provider's assessment, documented boundary and any specialist handling requirements; this worksheet does not decide salvage or disposal remotely.

Release drying only after the cleanup handoff
Ask the provider to document when containment, removal and cleaning are complete enough for the planned drying method. Keep the drying locations and targets attached to the same work-area names so equipment is not released against a vague whole-home status.
After the production call path is accepted, use the approved call path. Confirm that the provider explains sewage-cleanup eligibility and the boundary it can actually serve.
Ask the answering provider to identify itself and confirm availability, assessment charges and the written scope at your address.
YOUR DECISION WORKSHEET
Sewage cleanup containment and custody crosswalk
| Workstream | Required record | Unresolved question |
|---|---|---|
| Containment | Affected room, clean edge and traffic path | Which adjacent spaces need protection? |
| Building materials | Retain, clean, remove or specialist review | Who authorizes disposition? |
| Contents | Item, prior location, new location and custodian | How and when is it returned? |
| Drying handoff | Work area, release milestone and target record | What must finish before airflow begins? |

Build a short outline from what you know. This does not submit a request or book service.
Your call notes
Questions to ask: Draw the affected boundary and clean movement path. Assign a custody status to every moved item and removed material. Record who authorized disposal, storage or transfer. Please confirm whether you handle the water removal, cleanup, inspection or drying needs I describe and serve my address, plus any assessment fees and exclusions.
Common questions
Is a contents list the same as a custody record?
No. A custody record also shows who moved or authorized the item, where it went and how its return, cleaning or disposal decision will be documented.
Does the cleanup provider also own the drain repair?
Not automatically. Keep the drain or plumbing finding with the responsible trade and the containment, material handling, cleaning and drying scope with the restoration provider.
